Semi-Automatic vs Fully Automatic Strapping: The Throughput Maths

A semi-automatic strapping machine requires the operator to place the strap around the load and feed it into the head. A fully automatic machine strapes the load as it passes on the conveyor. The decision is arithmetic: straps per hour needed, against what an operator can physically sustain.

Do the arithmetic before the comparison

Count straps, not cartons. A carton with two straps is two operations. A semi-automatic cycle is limited by the operator handling the strap, not by the machine. Once you need more straps per hour than one person can sustain across a full shift, you are buying a second operator every shift or an automatic machine once.

Tension is the specification that protects the load

Too little tension and the load shifts in transit; too much and the strap cuts into the carton edge. Tension is adjustable on both formats — the difference is that an automatic machine applies the same tension every cycle, while a semi-automatic depends on how consistently the operator positions the load.

Can an automatic strapper handle mixed carton sizes?

Within the arch dimensions, yes. Loads outside the arch envelope need a different machine or a semi-automatic station.

What causes strap breakage at the weld?

Usually weld temperature or dwell out of adjustment, or strap quality inconsistent with the setting.
